At Wicor Primary School one of our key objectives is to promote and instil a love of reading, and of books, into all of our children.
We have a superbly stocked Library which spreads out into all areas of the school. All of our school community can relax and enjoy our fiction books in the Reader’s Lounge, find information about almost everything in the Enquiry Zone and brush up on their Shakespeare in our Poetry Corner!
The children are encouraged to review and recommend books to each other and have a voice in choosing books stocked in the Library.
We encourage all staff, children, and even parents to regularly borrow our books to enhance their personal and their children’s reading.
Sora is an online reading resource available to all our pupils to share with their families at home.
During a unit of work about keeping safe at sea, the children drilled into the life of Grace Darling, studied lifeboats and how they have changed over time including the changes in how they are launched, the Penlee disaster and learnt about lighthouses. Discovering the ways people keep safe at sea led the children to listen to the shipping forecast which they loved so much, they decided to learn it fluently. Alongside this unit, the Mousehole Cat was read and brought to life by our Librarian who had just come back from a holiday there. The unit finished with a visit from the RNLI who discussed Grace Darling with the children, and made sure they were all aware of how to keep safe around water.
