We fully support the aims of the National Curriculum for Physical Education (PE). We believe PE plays a vital role in helping children understand the importance of fitness and leading a healthy, active lifestyle. Alongside developing skills for individual and team sports, we encourage key attitudes such as persistence, self-improvement and accuracy. Children learn that individual effort is important both within and beyond a team.
We value competition and encourage all pupils to participate, strive to succeed, and show resilience. Equally, we teach children to lose graciously and to reflect on their performance to improve.
Our PE curriculum is designed to help pupils:
develop competence across a wide range of activities
remain physically active for sustained periods
engage in competitive sport
lead healthy, active lives
We use Primary PE Planning to create a progressive curriculum from Reception to Year 6, covering games, athletics, dance and gymnastics. Key focuses include coordination, ball skills, fitness and teamwork. Pupils experience a variety of sports such as dodgeball, netball, rounders, rugby and cricket, alongside activities like yoga and multi-skills training.
Each class has two PE lessons per week. Indoor lessons (gymnastics, dance and yoga) take place in the hall, while outdoor sessions (games and athletics) use the field or playground. In Year 3, pupils receive swimming lessons at Fareham Leisure Centre.
A specialist PE teacher supports teaching across year groups. By the end of Key Stage 1, pupils develop fairness, body awareness and fundamental skills. By the end of Key Stage 2, they are well-prepared for secondary school, with strong skills and positive attitudes. Local secondary schools consistently praise pupils’ enthusiasm and willingness to try new activities.
We enrich our curriculum through:
specialist outreach teaching and access to secondary school facilities
residential visits (Years 2, 4 and 6) including activities such as climbing, archery and canoeing
teaching on exercise, health and nutrition (Years 2–6)
a strong dance programme in Key Stage 2
We also offer additional sessions for Years 3–5 to prepare for competitions and performances, where pupils regularly achieve success and showcase their talents to the wider community.
