MFL: Spanish
From September 2024, Spanish will be introduced as part of our Key Stage 2 curriculum, delivered through the Primary Languages Network Scheme of Work. This engaging and structured programme incorporates videos featuring native Spanish speakers, interactive games and songs, supporting pupils in developing their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in an enjoyable and memorable way.
In addition to language acquisition, pupils will explore the rich and diverse cultures of Spanish-speaking countries. This includes learning about the traditions, foods and customs of both Spain and Latin America. Through this immersive approach, we aim to foster a love of languages while broadening pupils’ global awareness and cultural understanding.
The Primary Languages Network’s mission is to enable all teachers and schools to establish effective, primary-focused foreign language programmes. Their approach ensures that language learning is accessible for all teachers and is delivered in a way that is creative, purposeful and memorable for every learner.
This academic year marks the first year of Spanish learning for pupils in Years 3, 4 and 5, as Latin has previously been taught in Lower Key Stage 2. These year groups will begin with Stage 1 units to build strong foundational knowledge.
Year 6 pupils, who have already developed a solid grounding in Spanish through the Lingotots programme, will continue their learning through Stage 4 units, allowing them to build further confidence, fluency and depth of understanding.
All year groups will follow the designated modules within the Primary Languages Network Scheme of Work.
